International Conference on Asian Language Processing

The International Conference on Asian Language Processing (IALP) is the flagship conference of COLIPS. It is a series of conferences with unique focus on Asian Language Processing. The conference aims to advance the science and technology of all the aspects of Asian Language Processing by providing a forum for researchers in different fields of language study all over the world to meet.

The first meeting of the series was held in Singapore in 1986 and was called the "International Conference on Chinese Computing (ICCC)". This meeting initiated the study of Chinese and oriental languages processing in Singapore and contributed to the establishment of the Chinese and Oriental Languages Information Processing Society (COLIPS)  in Singapore in 1988, as well as the publication of the journal "Communications of COLIPS" in 1991. The journal is now known as "International Journal on Asian Language Processing". The early ICCC conferences were held in Singapore and attracted researchers working on Chinese information processing from Asia and other part of the world. Later, COLIPS decided to extend the existence of ICCC to other Asian countries. In ICCC 2005, a post-conference exchange session was organized in NECTEC in Thailand. In 2007, the main conference of ICCC moved out Singapore the first time. ICCC 2007 was held in Wuhan and was co-organized by Wuhan University, Chinese Information Processing Society of China, and COLIPS.

Due to the rapid progress of research on other Asian languages, in 2008 COLIPS rebranded ICCC conference into IALP conference so as to better cater to the needs of researchers working on Asian language processing. IALP also became an annual event that rotates among Asian cities. The first IALP conference, IALP 2008 was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand and was co-organized by COLIPS and Chiang Mai University. IALP 2009 was held in Singapore and was organized by COLIPS. IALP 2010 was held in Harbin and was co-organized by COLIPS, Chinese Information Processing Society of China and Heilongjiang Institute of Technology (HIT). IALP 2011 was held in Penang, Malaysia and jointly organized by COLIPS and Universiti Sains Malaysia. IALP 2012 was held in Hanoi, Vietnam and was co-organized by COLIPS and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (and MICA Institute). IALP 2013 was held in Urumqi, China and jointly organized by COLIPS, Xinjiang Normal University, and Beijing Institute of Technology.  IALP 2014 was jointly organized by the Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI) and Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), and COLIPS. Over the years, IALP has developed into one of important annual events on natural language processing in Asia.  COLIPS has good collabaration with IEEE Singapore Computer Chapter. In the organization of the conferences, IEEE Singapore Computer Chapter served as a technical co-sponsor. The proceedings were published by IEEE Xplore digital library or IEEE Conference Publication Services (CPS).
